Fission's Jake Brewer, Cheryl Contee, and Beka Economopoulos to attend Web of Change 2011

posted by Roz Lemieux on September 19, 2011

On September 21st, over 100 thought leaders will converge on a pristine back country island on the coast of British Columbia for four days of sharing, learning and collaboration about the intersection of technology and social change. Entering its tenth year, the Web of Change conference and retreat has continually attracted pioneers and tech-savvy leaders who are passionate about social change. This year, attendees range from representatives of Greenpeace to Salesforce and the Story of Stuff, an ongoing video project that grew out of an initial short film on sustainability.

Also this year, Fission Strategy’s own Jake Brewer will serve as one of 12 fellows at Web of Change 2011. Fellows are influential leaders in the world of technology and social change and will take the lead in shaping discussions at the conference. Jake’s extensive background in grassroots organizing and new media strategy, as well as his work with organizations as notable as the White House and as steadfast as the Energy Action Coalition, make him an apt fit for a role as a fellow.

The Web of Change blog calls Jake a “campaign architect who builds networks of people and resources to solve big problems.” This is most recently evidenced by his co-founding of one of Fission's clients, Define American, an online storytelling initiative to re-shape the immigration debate. This is Jake’s first time serving as a fellow at Web of Change, but his second year attending the conference, and he is certainly excited:

I think this is going to be a particularly powerful Web of Change as the model for the Anchor Team and fellows has been refined, and the discussion topics honed. I'm particularly excited about the emphasis on harnessing compelling stories to drive behavioral change in our campaigns, as well as diving into whether or not our campaigns are having the kind of impact we need to have on Capitol Hill. As always, though, I'm most excited to see what unexpected, game-changing ideas arise as a result of putting 100 brilliant people into a room and stirring it up.

Web of Change takes place on Cortes Island, BC.

Along with Jake, Fission’s own Cheryl Contee and Beka Economopoulos will also be attending. Cheryl was invited to be a fellow at last year’s conference, and is proud that Fission is co-sponsoring the elite conference this year. In a Web of Change blog post leading up to the 2010 conference, Cheryl explains, “now that geo-location applications like Foursquare and augmented reality apps like Layar are shifting urban commerce at the intersection of mobile internet and social networking, my goal in sparking this conversation is to help kickstart greater focus on these emerging innovations.”

Web of Change has repeatedly sold out in recent years. Taking place at the acclaimed well-being center of Hollyhock, and in front of the beautiful backdrop of Cortes Island, Web of Change 2011 is sure to be a success. To follow progress on the conference, stay tuned to their website and Twitter page
