Our very own Cheryl Contee was featured on Huffington Post Live to discuss several topics ranging from Mitt Romney’s outlook on insurance to the absence of black Senators. Below is a summary of each of those videos she was featured in as well.
Democrats React to Obama’s DNC Speech
Cheryl spoke about the reaction in Charlotte to President Obama’s DNC Speech. She stated that it could have been a bit more personable but nevertheless, people cheered and applauded for all of his points.
Due to his fantastic oratory skills, we often have high expectations for the President. When his speeches don’t seem to compare to those given during his 2008 campaign he is seen as lacking aggression. There is criticism that he may have been vague during his DNC speech, but Obama stated specific figures about creating jobs in manufacturing and education.

Black Senators Don’t Exist Who’s to Blame?
Cheryl said, “African Americans are 13-15% of the demographic, so we should have 13-15 represented in the Senate or at least one.” It is typical for a House of Representatives member in the Congressional Black Caucus to focus their attention on maintaining their seats and staying in power in the House rather than progressing to state or national levels.
Cheryl brings up an interesting point that black Republican Senators may become prevalent as demographics shift and Republicans seek to widen their appeal.
But, who is to blame for the lack of black Senators? Well, there is lack of support in the form of PACs for black Senators. There aren’t grassroots organizations that are supporting, packaging, and nurturing any sort of wave of black Senators and those in the Congressional Black Caucus can influence the next generation of black leaders.

Sound Off on the Election
Mitt Romney made the statement that “people don’t die in their apartments because they don’t have insurance.” Critics say that Mitt Romney isn’t in touch with everyday people issues and comes off as insensitive.
According to research done by Families USA, there were 26,000 people that died prematurely in 2010 because they didn’t have health insurance. Cheryl explains that Mitt Romney is out of touch with everyday people and those who are struggling with insurance or high medical bills.
